The Hack House Museum
…Where the Past Is Always Present

Step back in time to 1888 Milan, when carriages were the preferred mode of travel and afternoon tea was enjoyed on an airy covered porch. When garden parties gathered in the shade of an old oak tree and men competed to see whose horseshoe would come closest to scoring a ‘ringer.’

That period—the Victorian era—is when the Hack House, a 14-room residence, was constructed just east of downtown. Built for a wealthy widow and later occupied by two generations of a Milan founding family, the Hack House was considered the grandest home in the area. And, with its original etched-glass windows, fancy fireplaces, and mural work, it still is…

The Hack House and its four outbuildings (including a three-seat outhouse) are now owned by the City of Milan and operated as a museum by the Milan Area Historical Society.

The city and society invite you to visit this local landmark during tour hours or by special appointment. Sugar cookies and a smile greet every guest to the Hack House: where the past is always present.

Windmill is up and running!

The most recent restoration project has been completed at the Hack House Museum, is the windmill.  Just driving by you can see the windmill whirling around in the wind.  Although we are not pumping water as the windmill is designed to do, it has been erected over the well pit in the same location as the original windmill.  The project was completed with the professional help of Mark Nice from South Lyon , members Bob Schrock, Doug Edwards, Gerry Weaver, and Ken Baumann. Dan Wagner owner of Milan Vault and Milan resident donated his time and crane to lift the 350 pound fins and tail to the top of the 30 foot high windmill.  The windmill was donated to the society by Karl Jurgensen, it’s original home was his uncle's farm.
